Dimensional weight pricing exists to address a fundamental economics problem in freight: a large, light package (say, a box of foam pillows) takes up as much trailer space as a small, dense package (say, a box of tools) but generates far less weight-based revenue. Without dim weight pricing, carriers would lose money on light, bulky shipments.

The dim weight formula divides the package volume (length × width × height in inches) by a divisor. The standard divisor in LTL is 194 cubic inches per pound (some carriers use 250). The result is the dim weight in pounds. The carrier bills whichever is greater: actual weight or dim weight.

For shippers, dim weight has two practical implications. First, packaging efficiency matters. Oversized boxes with excess internal void space generate higher dim weight charges. Right-sizing packaging to minimize void space reduces billable weight. Second, density drives class in LTL. Understanding how your shipment's density interacts with both freight class and dim weight calculations gives you a complete picture of LTL cost.

In parcel shipping (UPS, FedEx), dim weight divisors are lower (typically 139 for domestic), making the impact more significant. In LTL, dim weight is a factor for large, light shipments but less frequently the decisive pricing element than in parcel.

Shippers with consistently light-and-large commodity profiles should analyze their LTL invoices for dim weight adjustments. In some cases, re-engineering palletization or packaging configuration can meaningfully reduce billable weight without changing the product itself.
